What are those big black nets in the Muddy River along the upper Fens?

Those “geo-cells”  were installed as an experiment by the US Army Corps of Engineers during Phase 1 of the Restoration Project. They were intended to stabilize the embankments to allow wetlands plants to grow and thrive. Unfortunately, efforts to protect young plants from herbivores (like carp and rabbits) have not been successful; wetlands vegetation has been eliminated from significant stretches of the upper Fens area.

Over the past several months, the geo-cells have loosened from their stakes and floated to the surface.  It’s not clear if they are harmful (other than being unsightly), but Boston Parks and Recreation Department is studying their condition and has received permission from the Boston Conservation Commission to have the floating cells removed if deemed necessary.

There are currently no plans to install geo-cells in other areas of the Project. Stay tuned!
