On Friday, June 21, the Friends of Fairsted and the National Park Service co-hosted a walk along the Riverway with Loic Massias, Olmsted scholar, graduate student at the Harvard School of Design and 2023 Charles E. Beveridge Fellow. Undaunted by stormy weather, about 30 brave souls took a walk to hear more about some easily overlooked aspects of Olmsted’s aesthetic sensibilities for the Emerald Necklace and how they contrast with design principles for European parks built during the same era. Loic also shared intriguing stories about the ways that 19th century politics and economics help explain some of the subtle differences between the Brookline side and the Boston side of the river.
Thank you, Loic, for a very informative lecture!
