The Muddy River Restoration Project Maintenance and Management Oversight Committee (MMOC) joins with parks advocates nationwide to mark the passing of Betsy Shure Gross. Betsy was the most astute, generous, and creative champion of citizen activism on behalf of our treasured natural resources. She was a guiding force behind the MMOC, the National Association for Olmsted Parks, Mass Parks for All, Olmsted 2022, and countless grassroots organizations that embody her steadfast commitment to Olmsted’s vision of public parks as “democracy in dirt.”
“The Muddy River Restoration Project didn’t come from elected or appointed officials. This remarkable state and national model of activism on behalf of our open spaces came from citizens.”
Betsy’s words and work inspire our stewardship of the Muddy River and its parklands.
Her interview with the Olmsted Network for Olmsted 200 captures Betsy’s inimitable spirit.
Her keynote address at the inaugural Muddy River Symposium calls for collective responsibility to “support historic space preservation, revitalization, and restoration.”
The remarkable legacy of Betsy Shure Gross will be honored in a forthcoming tribute.
