A Celebration of Brookline’s Hall’s Pond

The November 29th Boston Globe features a glorious photo essay by Lane Turner, a self-described “regular visitor…to a cherished urban gem, its value incalculable, more than fulfilling the vision behind the sanctuary ideals that arose” fifty years ago with the landmark Wetlands Protection Act.

Turner describes his experience of the 2.5-acre Hall’s Pond Brookline sanctuary as, “Like the herons, I’ve long sought sustenance of a kind beside the water, finding my own patience rewarded with moments of grace. Over the course of decades, the pond is where I’ve retreated to mull the mental burdens we all carry.

The draw of the pond increased for many of us when events, both personal and geopolitical, made the call to commune with nature more strident. Having spent hundreds of hours comforted by the water’s serenity, I resolved to record my gratitude in photographs, recording the life of the little oasis in all four seasons.”

The photographs and narrative are sublime. See them all.
