Great Part-time Administrative Staff Opportunity

Muddy River Restoration Project
Maintenance and Management Oversight Committee
68 Harvard Street
Brookline, Massachusetts  02447

This is an engaging opportunity for someone with a deep interest in and affinity for the environment, public parks, Frederick Law Olmsted, environmental advocacy, and public process.

The MMOC:  The Muddy River Restoration Project Maintenance and Management Oversight Committee (MMOC) is an independent oversight body, established by the Massachusetts Secretary of the Executive Office of Environmental Affairs in 2002, for the Muddy River Flood Control, Water Quality and Habitat Enhancement and Historic Preservation Project (the Project).  The MMOC was created to work with the Project sponsors, City of Boston, Town of Brookline, commonwealth of Massachusetts, and other stakeholders and government agencies, to ensure public participation in the Project, protect the considerable public investment, and provide independent oversight of the sponsors’ maintenance and management of the Project area after the completion of the Project.

Administrative staff position:  The MMOC seeks a highly-motivated administrative support professional with strong organizational, communication and technical skills, and with the ability to work independently.  The Administrator will report to and be supervised by the Chair of the MMOC, will provide administrative support to the MMOC, and will be the eyes and ears of the MMOC outdoors on the ground photographing progress with respect to both maintenance of the completed portions of the Project and construction activity about to start.

The position is a half-time position (20 hours per week).  Compensation will be commensurate with experience.  No benefits.

The MMOC maintains a small office in Brookline Village, but given current health concerns, all meetings are held through ZOOM.  The Administrator will be expected to participate in monthly evening MMOC ZOOM meetings and other subcommittee meetings that usually occur in the evening.  Responsibilities will also include project site visits (along the Muddy River in Boston and Brookline) and some meetings, as required, at other locations.  Occasional in person meetings with the Chair may take place at the MMOC office.

Project Background:  The Project is a joint project of the City of Boston and the Town of Brookline, working with the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs and the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation.  It is located within the Emerald Necklace, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted in the late 19th century.  The Project involves dredging substantial portions of the Muddy River from Olmsted Park in Brookline to the Victory Gardens in the Back Bay Fens, and restoration of the historic park shoreline and upland in the areas affected by construction.  The Project is funded with federal, state and local money.  The US Army Corps of Engineers designed the Project and will manage construction.  The Project has five objectives:  control flooding; improve water quality; restore landscape and historic resources; enhance aquatic and riparian habitat; and implement improved stormwater management throughout the Muddy River watershed.  Construction in Charlesgate was completed by 2005; Phase 1 of the Project was completed in 2016.
