High fences down, low fences up: Some pedestrian paths returned to public use
May 24, 2022. Dredging and landscaping were completed last fall in many of the work areas along the Muddy River. The tall, 8-foot construction fencing is being removed and replaced by 4-foot black vinyl fences.

Pedestrian and bicycle traffic diverted along Riverway near Back Bay Yards
May 24, 2022. As the US Army Corps of Engineers and its contractor, Charter Engineering, prepare to dredge the twelfth and final work area of the Muddy River Restoration Project, pedestrian and bicycle paths along the north end of Riverway Park will be temporarily closed to the public.

Upstream herring migration season continues through June 15
May 24, 2022. Although rarely observed in the Muddy River in recent years, blueback herring once migrated from the Charles River up to Leverett Pond to breed. According to state fishery experts, upstream migration season lasts from April 1 through June 15 each year.

Fall Planting – October 90-Day Look-Ahead
October 8, 2021. Upland trees and shrubs have been delivered and planting is underway in some areas where dredging has been completed—in the Riverway on either side of Netherlands Road and in the Fenway between Avenue Louis Pasteur and the Museum of Fine Arts (Work Areas 3, 4, 7, 8, and 9).

Temporary Closure of Netherlands Road at the Riverway, Tuesday, Oct. 5
October 1, 2021. The US Army Corps of Engineers has advised that on Tuesday, October 5, 2021, between 7 am and 3 pm, Netherlands Road will be closed for about 2 hours to facilitate delivery of trees and shrubs to be planted nearby.

THE MUDDY RIVER FLOODS—AND RECOVERS QUICKLY!

24 hours later, the path is dry.
The remnants of Hurricane Ida passed over Boston on September 2, 2021, dropping more than 4 inches of rain in neighborhoods adjacent to the Muddy River. The USGS gage at Netherlands Road recorded a maximum height of 15.24 ft, exceeding the USGS official threshold defining a “minor flood” event (15.00 ft). (Typically, during dry weather, the height of the river is approximately 8 ft at that location). During the storm, observers noted that the Riverway pedestrian path near the gage was under about 18 inches of water. After the storm, floodwaters receded quickly, and by the next day, the walkway was perfectly usable again.continue reading →Was this expected? Yes.
