General: The Muddy River Flood Risk Management & Environmental Restoration Phase 1 Construction Project is located in the footprint generally between the Riverway downstream to Avenue Louis Pasteur. The major project components involve the installation of a 10-foot by 24-foot box culvert under the Riverway roadway, the installation of 10-foot by 24-foot box culvert under the Brookline Avenue roadway, daylighting of the area between the Riverway and Brookline Avenue, and daylighting of the area between Brookline Avenue and Avenue Louis Pasteur. Daylighting is the removal of existing twin 72″ culverts and excavation of the area to return the waterway to a natural state. This Notice is intended to identify the general construction activities that will be performed in the next 90 days. A figure that shows the existing conditions and the proposed improvements is at the end of this report.

 June 2014 through August 2014 Period: 

  • In order to continue installation of the arch culvert underneath Brookline Ave, the traffic shift on March 29, 2014 maintained Brookline Avenue, between the Riverway Connector and Park Drive, as one-way only inbound traffic and shifted the four inbound lanes to the left. A new pedestrian walkway was constructed on the left side of the Brookline Avenue adjacent to the former Sears parking lot for pedestrian travel through the project area. The current traffic pattern in place can be seen in the figure shown below.
  • Since the traffic shift on March 29th, the contractor has installed about half of the drilled shafts we need for the remainder of the Brookline Avenue precast culvert sections and wing walls. The remaining drilled shafts will be installed once the temporary storm drain diversion structure is complete which is expected to be at the end of June.
  • For the storm drains diversion, the contractor has installed the 84” diversion pipe across the Jug Handle road to the Muddy River. A temporary junction box will be constructed to transfer the flow from the two existing storm drain lines to the 84” diversion pipe. This activity will occur over the next few weeks. This temporary junction box will enable the construction of the permanent junction box which will connect the existing storm drains to two new 54” diameter pipes which will empty into the new Brookline Avenue culvert. The permanent junction box construction and installation of the corresponding culvert sections is expected to take 3 months.
  • Once the remaining drilled shafts are installed, then the pile cap and invert slab concrete placements will occur in mid-July. Precast concrete culvert sections may begin early to mid August. Construction of the wing walls will follow after setting the concrete culverts.
  • At the end of this notice we have included some pictures that show the 84” diversion pipe for the temporary storm drains bypass and the drilled shafts work at the right (looking downstream) wing wall. We thought folks would be interested in seeing the work occurring behind the fence.
