Introduction
The Muddy River Parks section of Olmsted’s Emerald Necklace will undergo significant changes in the next few years. The Oversight Committee’s role is to represent you, the public, in ensuring that the substantial investment in public funds are well spent, and continue to serve you in both environmental and functional ways over many years. Below are some of the recent activities that inspire confidence that our goals for these rejuvenated parks will be realized.

Recent Improvements and Oversight

Shedding light at Landmark Center: Site Visit
Jim Keegan, project engineer The parkland in front of the Landmark Center will be “daylighted” (excavated to open up the original waterway). The jughandle on the south side of Brookline Ave. is to be removed. The traffic pattern of The Riverway will be changed to allow a left turn on to Park Drive.
Construction is scheduled for summer 2008

Accessibility at the Longwood MBTA station
stairs to be replaced by a rampneighbors discuss MBTA accessibility improvementsLack of access for the disabled from the Longwood area of Brookline has prevented many from enjoying Riverway Park. As part of their improvements for accessibility at the station, the MBTA recently committed to building a ramp from the Longwood MBTA station across the flood control berm to Riverway Park.

Construction is scheduled
for spring 2008.

Volunteer Workdays

volunteers in the parksThe High Street Hill Association in Brookline has a long history of supporting restoration efforts in Olmsted Park. A number of “workdays” were held in 2007 to clean, rake, weed, mulch, and replant the Babbling Brook and Allerton Overlook areas. Brookline Parks and Open Space Division staff supplied guidance, expertise, and equipment. To sign up for next year, email us.
